Epiphytic Eunotia (Bacillariophyceae) on Podostemum from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, including new observations on morphology and taxonomy of some rare recorded species Biota Neotropica
Cavalcante,Kaoli Pereira; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; de Castro,Emanuela Cristina; de Azevedo Tibiriçá,Carlos Eduardo Junqueira; Wojciechowski,Juliana; Ludwig,Thelma Alvim Veiga.
Eunotia is a highly diverse diatom genus in the Neotropics. Considerable morphological variability of the valve showed in several species of the genus resulted in a quite confused taxonomy. Twelve Eunotiataxa attached to Podostemum spp. were investigated using the light microscopy (LM). Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in order to investigate the fine morphology of most abundant taxa. Samples were collected from four rivers from the State of Santa Catarina between March 2009 and July 2010. The freshwater diatom flora from this south Brazilian state is poorly known in relation to its neighboring states. Eunotia biseriatoides has intermediate features betweenEunotia and Perinotia, and the circumscription of these genera is discussed...

Independent effects of grazing and tide pool habitats on the early colonisation of an intertidal community on western Antarctic Peninsula RChHN
Segovia-Rivera,V; Valdivia,N.
BACKGROUND: Prevailing environmental conditions can modulate the structuring role of biotic interactions. In intertidal habitats, less stressful environmental conditions and/or higher grazer densities may allow grazing effects to be stronger in tide pools than on emergent rocks. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a manipulative experiment on an intertidal rocky shore in Fildes Bay, King George Island, in which the effect of the dominant grazer Nacella polaris on the structure of benthic periphyton communities was compared between emergent rock and tide pool habitats. Also, we determined the spatial variation in density, weight, and maximum length of individuals of N. polaris in both habitats RESULTS: The density of N. polaris was significantly larger in...

Influence of periphyton substrates and rearing density on Liza aurata growth and production in marine nursery ponds ArchiMer
Richard, Marion; Maurice, Julien-thomas; Anginot, Aurore; Paticat, Francois; Verdegem, M. C. J.; Hussenot, Jerome.
The main objectives of this investigation were to test the effects of (i) the presence of periphyton substrates, (ii) rearing density and (iii) supplemental feeding with dry feed on the growth and production of golden mullet (Liza aurata) juveniles. Twenty-six 1 m(2)-cages were installed in a French marine pond from April till June 2008. Mullets were stocked in cages with or without substrate at a density of 0, 20,40 or 60 individuals per cage. Each treatment was carried out in triplicate. In addition, 20 fish were put in three tanks and fed ad libitum with dry feed. The results showed that (i) although mullets were seen to graze on periphyton substrates, their presence did not affect, mullet growth and production. In future studies, meshed substrates could...

Soft-bodied benthic algae in pristine Brazilian streams: from acid to karst Acta Botanica
Fonseca,Bárbara Medeiros; Feijó,Lidia Mendes; Mendonça-Galvão,Luciana de.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated soft-bodied benthic algae from seven streams located in protected areas of central Brazil (Parque Nacional de Brasília, Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros and Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca), and related them to abiotic factors. We addressed the following questions: A) how algal community structure in Cerrado streams is influenced by the marked seasonality typical of the region; and B) how karst geology influences algal communities in Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca, as compared to streams in other Cerrado areas. Samples were collected between 2012 and 2013 from a single site in each stream, and upstream and downstream of caves present in Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca. Altogether, 159 taxa were recorded. Algal community...

Structure and dynamics of the community of periphytic algae in a subtropical reservoir (state of São Paulo, Brazil) Acta Botanica
Taniwaki,Ricardo Hideo; Borghi,Tatiana Cintra; Magrin,Albano Geraldo Emílio; Calijuri,Maria do Carmo; Bottino,Flávia; Moschini-Carlos,Viviane.
Much remains to be learned about biological diversity, which constitutes a valuable natural resource. Due to the pressure that human activity has put on natural resources, biodiversity has been reduced, often unbeknownst to those responsible for that activity. Therefore, we aimed to perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of periphytic algae in the Itupararanga reservoir, correlating the results with the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, as well as with climatic conditions. To that end, five samples were collected at four sampling stations in the Itupararanga reservoir during the year 2010. Aquatic macrophytes were collected with a 156-cm² frame, and the periphytic algae were scraped free of the macrophytes with a brush. Samples...

Submersion time, depth, substrate type and sampling method as variation sources of marine periphyton ArchiMer
Richard, Marion; Trottier, C.; Verdegem, M. C. J.; Hussenot, Jerome.
Periphyton is an additional food source in African and Asian brackish and freshwater fish ponds. The present study was a preliminary assessment of periphyton development on artificial substrates in temperate marine ponds. The effects of submersion time, substrate type, water depth, and total or partial sampling methods on the quantity and quality of periphyton collected, were evaluated. Four types of substrate (W: wooden poles, S: smooth fiber-glass strips, m: mosquito screen (1 mm-mesh) and M: garden netting (5 mm-mesh)) were deployed in a marine pond, and periphyton was collected 15 and 30 days later. The total amount of periphyton per substrate unit was collected as one sample or as 5 sub-samples. Results showed that (i) periphyton biomass in a marine...

The genus Tryblionella W. Smith (Bacillariaceae, Bacillariophyta) in southern Brazil salt marshes Biota Neotropica
Bertolli,Lucielle Merlym; Talgatti,Dávia Marciana; Nascimento,Thamires Mariah da Silveira; Torgan,Lezilda Carvalho.
Abstract: Tryblionella is a large epipelic genus, widespread from fresh to marine waters. Most of the studies including the genus are based only in light microscopy. Few recent studies are exclusively dedicated to Tryblionella and the ultrastructure of some species is still little known. In this paper we present eleven species of Tryblionella found in epiphyton and microphytobenthos in Patos Lagoon salt marshes. All the species are described, illustrated in light and scanning electron microscopy and comments about their taxonomy, distribution and ecology are provided. Two taxa are reported for the first time in the State of Rio Grande do Sul and one in Southern Brazil. The number of species registered in this study comprises nearly a half of the number of...

Trophic relationships between benthic or planktonic microphytes and infaunal bivalve molluscs ArchiMer
Plantecuny, M; Bodoy, Alain.
In order to estimate energetic relationship, microphytic and benthic bivalve levels of a shallow (1.5 m), sandy ecosystem near Marseille (Gulf of Fos, Southern France) were sampled monthly during 1.5 year, in two sites differing by their wave exposure. In the sheltered area, the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species, while another bivalve, Donax trunculus , was found in the open, wave exposed site. Chlorophyll a and primary production of the phytoplankton and the microphytobenthos, as well as population dynamic, growth and biochemical composition of bivalves (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) were monitored.

Use of food resources and resource partitioning among five syntopic species of Hypostomus (Teleostei: Loricariidae) in an Atlantic Forest river in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Abilhoa,Vinicius; Valduga,Marcos O.; Frehse,Fabricio de A.; Vitule,Jean R.S..
ABSTRACT We analyzed the diet and resource partitioning among five syntopic species of Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 in the Corumbataí River in southeastern Brazil. The gut contents of 352 individuals were assessed and 21 food items were identified and quantified under an optical microscope. The food items found in the gut contents indicate that these suckermouth loricariids are bottom-dwelling detritivorous/periphytivorous catfishes. PERMANOVA and SIMPER analyses indicated variation in the consumption of some resources, and the contribution of periphytic algae was primarily responsible for such dissimilarity. ECOSIM analyses of dietary overlap showed evidence of resource sharing among all species in the dry and rainy periods. This is most likely the result of...
